As part of the teaching\, participants from the Carnegie community\, supported by instructors\, will design and make decorations with paper materials\, which they will personalize with colors and figures allusive to this beautiful celebration of the Day of the Dead.\nThese decorations will be used to decorate five altars located in Watari\, Oppenheimer Park\, Vandu\, Listening Post and Carnegie.\nThis activity is open to the general public on Thursdays October 13\, 20 and 27 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Carnegie Community Center.  \nNo registration required.

SUMMARY:GRIEFWAVE
DESCRIPTION:GRIEFWAVE is an elegiac response to the life and death of Nikki Reimer’s brother\, Chris Reimer (1986-2012)\, a Calgary-based indie musician. It is also a meditation on the oscillating nature of loss and grief\, and the ways in which mourning changes when it takes place in public\, digital spheres. \nNIKKI REIMER (she/they) is a multimedia artist and writer\, and chronically ill neurodivergent prairie settler currently living in Calgary / Mohkinstsis. She has been involved with art and writing communities\, primarily in Calgary and Vancouver\, for over 20 years. They are the author of three books of poetry and multiple essays on grief. GRIEFWAVE\, a multimedia\, web-based\, extended elegy\, was published in February 2022. Frequent themes are feminism\, the body\, the Anthropocene\, late capitalism\, death\, grief\, loss\, and animal subjectivity. \nThis program is also offered online. SUMMARY:Sacred Memorial Shrine Workshop for Front Line Workers
DESCRIPTION:Presenter:\nPaula Jardine / Marina Szijarto \nProgram Description:\nAn online gathering for making simple memorials\, using a template provided\, to honour those whose deaths have affected our lives.\nGuided by artist Marina Szijarto\, the workshop is intended to be a refuge from what feels like a relentless wave of loss in the downtown east side. \nThe finished memorials can be added to a community shrine or personal shrine. \nWorkshops are limited to 6-8 participants per session\, and are open to frontline staff and volunteers serving the public in the DTES \nRegistrants will be provided with a zoom link\, and some suggestions of things to bring to create sacred space\, including a candle and a small bowl of water. \nIn the first part we will introduce the idea\, how we’ve come to this work and the intention of this workshop\, followed by some basic instructions on constructing the memorials. \nMarina will lead us in establishing safe ritual space for creating our individual memorials. \nOnce everyone has finished we will take a break\, to refresh ourselves\, then reconvene to share our thoughts and memorials. \nThe final half hour of the workshop will be an opportunity for Q&A \nThe workshop will empower the frontline workers and volunteers with resources to help others create their own sacred memorial shrines. \nThis program will be provided in spoken English. \nAbout the Artist\nA former resident of the DTES\, and a current artist in residence at Mountain View Cemetery\, Marina Szijarto is an artist\, theatre designer\, community ritualist\, shrine maker\, festival creator\, registered celebrant and ancestral healing guide. \n\n\nVenue:\nZoom (Online) \n\nRegistration:\nContact Beverly Walker to register for a spot. \nEmail: events@communitydeathcareproject.ca \nPhone: 604-665-2213

DESCRIPTION:Presenter:\nCross Cultural Walking Tour \nProgram Description:\nFirst opened in 1886\, Mountain View Cemetery is the final resting place of many of the earliest members of our city’s population\, with sections designated for various communities. \n\nParticipate in half-hour tours of the Jewish and Japanese sections of the cemetery.
